The “Conservation and Management of World Heritage sites in China” project, now entering its third phase, is UNESCO’s first trial in integrating the three major cultural Conventions, i.e. the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, under a single project framework within the Chinese context. The goal of this approach is to achieve heritage conservation for sustainable development of the local communities at World Heritage sites, thereby contributing to both the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and China’s 13th Five-Year Plan.

As a major component of this third phase of the project, the World Heritage sustainable livelihood activity seeks to develop green products and creative cultural handicrafts based on the particular biodiversity and intangible cultural resources of the World Heritage sites. These unique, eco-friendly, sustainable products locally produced by World Heritage site residents will then be introduced to the market, along with the cultural values and stories behind them. Through the development of sustainable livelihood products, we hope to strengthen environmental protection, safeguard traditional culture and craftsmanship, and alleviate poverty.
